My life. . . streamlined

I pretty much balk at the idea of New Year's Resolutions, always have. This year, however, I just had too many things bugging me (I know, me, bugged, who would have guessed) to NOT make some changes. I'm not saying I got all official and laminated a list or anything. It's all floating around in my noggin, and there it will stay. One thing I will say is that I'm trying to simplify in many ways. In that spirit of thrift I thought of the Strunk and White mantra "omit needless words". Taking those words totally out of context I wandered very stream-of-consciousness-like to thinking about how much time I waste in the copious amounts of text floating around the web. Then, for a fraction of a second I considered checking out of the blog-o-sphere altogether and imagined HOW much time I would have to do. . . well, anything else. Good thing I didn't entertain that idea for long; because if there's one thing I learned from the very first journal I ever kept, it's that writing is cleansing. Doesn't matter if I'm babbling (kind of like now) to myself and breaking every language usage rule there is. It clears my head, period. So, with THAT explanation out of the way I thought I'd share with you a few of the other streamlining ideas I rejected.
I was thinking. . .

  • hairless cat? (and shave the dogs, and the kids for that matter)
  • make the kids' socks out of swiffer sheets? (if only I could really sew)
  • throw kids' dirty clothes in the tub with them?
  • read kids whatever book I'm reading to myself?
  • don't sleep?
  • stop wearing makeup?
  • use paper plates?
  • maid? (was sure that one was a keeper. . .)
  • feed the kids cereal for every meal?
  • move the chickens to the basement? (saving in SO many ways there)
  • leave hay barn open so horses can help themselves?
  • stop answering the phone?
  • don't exercise. . .or work. . .or shop?
  • toilet train cat and leave dogs outside?
  • boarding school?

I could go on all night, but that would be wasting valuable time.

I feel the exact same way about the New Year resolutions! I get totally stressed out thinking of all the things I am not doing, or doing but doing wrong, and the multitude of ways that I should fix it...whatever "it" is. So the result is a sleepless night and me sitting in the dark living room at 3am watching infomercials (Grey's fav) and seriously contemplating my need of a clipy thing to keep my bra straps from showing beneath my sleeveless shirts...ya.

ANYWAY - I just want to remind you that if you need a night to run away I would be more than happy to rearrange my schedule in any way I can to stand in as warden. We need to find a day when you can come and have a girls day with us anyway. ;)

This is my first year in about a decade to make "resolutions" as well. More because I need to get out of a rut, and less because it is the New Year. But, they are more life goals then anything. 1. Stop wasting time 2. Clean more 3. Shop less 4. Clean less, play more 5. Stop wasting time 6. Don't repeat things because it wastes time.

These would save SO MUCH TIME. I really like the kid's socks made out of swiffers. Clever, you are.

Here I sit, doing the blog thing while the sink is full of dirty dishes, the bathroom is soooo filthy, and one of my "resolutions" was to be cleaner. I am not off to a good start am I?

"The pen is the vehicle to corral your thoughts." I am not quite sure who said that. Andrew likes that quote and asked me to write that. We are sure glad that you decided against the idea of not blogging. We would miss you here in this world. I just don't bother with the "resolutions" I know I won't keep any of them even if I did remember them.

Glad i'm not the only one who gets bugged. Haven't we earned the right by this age? And new year's resolutions - not a good idea. My new year's plan this year is to accept my imperfections, embrace them. Life is for making mistakes is my mantra this year. okay, i'll try not to go overboard, but the whole working for perfection thing really starts to bug! AL

Love that Strunk and White was your inspiration. If only it would inspire my students . . .
